Carter, Alfred Gordon Andrews

Lance Corporal 2626 Alfred Gordon Andrews Carter. 1st Battalion Honourable Artillery Company. Killed in action at Beaucourt between 13th and 15th November 1916, aged 21. Buried at Martinsart British Cemetery, France.

  • Enlisted at Armoury House, London

  • Admitted into HAC on 25th November 1914 (Private – 2nd Battalion), aged 19 years 1 month
  • Height 5ft 10 inches
  • No previous military experience
  • Transferred to the 1st Battalion and went overseas from Southampton on 1st July 1915
  • Promoted to Lance Corporal (unpaid) on 9th October 1916
  • First listed as wounded and missing, then killed in action at Beaucourt between 13th and 15th November 1916
  • Aged  21
  • Buried in an orchard in Hamel, 4 miles north of Albert
  • Reburied at Martinsart British Cemetery, France
  • Grave ref. I.H.27.
  • Son of Frank Andrew and Adeline Florinda Emma Carter, of 113 Balfour Rd., Highbury, London.
  • Father was Private Secretary to a corn merchant (per 1911 census)
  • Had a twin brother, Lance Bombardier Cyril Frederic Ward Carter, who died on 15th November 1918 whilst serving with 2/A Battery HAC and is buried in Cambria East Military Cemetery (Grave ref. II.A.32).
  • No other siblings.
