Chandler, Walter George

Lance Corporal 2770 Walter George Chandler. 1st Battalion Honourable Artillery Company (Infantry). Killed in action at Beaumont Hamel on 14th February 1917, aged 36.  No known grave.  Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, France.

  • Second child of George Charles Chandler (upholsterers warehouseman and later a commercial traveller in blinds, d. 13th September 1912, b. St Mary’s Cemetery, Wandsworth) and Mary Elizabeth (nee Newman, d.14th July 1928).
  • Sisters: Amy Mary (b. c.1879) and Lily Ethel (b. c.1887, wife of Captain Frederick William Hoare, HAC, killed in action 10th August 1917)
  • Brother: Albert Henry (b. c.1883)
  • 1911 census: Aged 30, living with his parents and eldest sister in Battersea, working as a clerk to a builder
  • Enlisted on 9th December 1914
  • Residence given as New Wandsworth
  • 5ft 8½ inches tall
  • Promoted to Lance Corporal in the 2nd Battalion on 25th September 1915
  • Promoted to Corporal on 26th February 1916
  • Transferred to 1st Battalion, reverted to rank of Private and embarked for France on 21st July 1916
  • Arrived in France on 22nd July 1916
  • Promoted to Acting Serjeant and attached to Entrenching Battalion on 29th July 1916
  • Rejoined 1st Battalion and reverted to Private on 24th November 1916
